General Questions

  • Can I start volunteering right away?

Yes, for many opportunities you can volunteer immediately after registering on VolunteerBridge. Some opportunities require an orientation or training session. Some also require a background check or other steps in order to comply with state regulations. The steps necessary are noted on each volunteer opportunity. We can help you manage these steps so that you can start volunteering quickly.

  • Why is it important for me to show up to the volunteer opportunities for which I register?

At Catholic Charities, we’re committed to ensuring the best experience for volunteers and the clients they serve, and your participation is key to our collective success. We tailor our projects around goals, needs, and tasks, basing the number of volunteer slots we offer on these factors. As a result, your attendance at projects for which you sign up is critical.

  • Do I need to make a long-term commitment to volunteer?

As a volunteer with Catholic Charities, you are not required to serve at a minimum number of projects or repeatedly at the same project. We do ask you make a commitment to service. When you sign up for a volunteer opportunity, the volunteer leader is expecting you to arrive prepared and on time, ready to stay for the entirety of the project. If you enjoyed your experience, we would love to have you return to the project as many times as you would like. Just visit the “Opportunity Calendar” and sign up for future dates. Providing consistent volunteers at our projects helps to build relationships and better meet the needs of each community.

  • Do you provide some sort of documentation that I volunteered for your organization?

Yes, we can provide official documentation on Catholic Charities letterhead for the hours you have served with us. To request the letter, please email volunteer@catholiccharities.net  five business days in advance, so your hours may be verified.

  • My company is interested in having our employees volunteer together several times during the year. Can you help with that?

We would love to have your company join us as a year round partner in service to Chicago! Please contact volunteer@catholiccharities.net
 



Registration Questions

  • How do I register on this site and manage my volunteer account?

Click on the LOGIN button at the top right hand corner of this page, or click Become a Volunteer, the far left tab in blue menu bar above. 

- When creating your password, it must be at least 8 characters.
- The email address you enter will be your username to login in the future.
- If during registration you receive a message that your email address is already in use, then click on the LOGIN button at the top right of the page, and enter your email address. If you do not know the password for your account, then click "Forgot Password" and password reset instructions will be emailed to you.

Once you click “submit” you will be automatically logged into your account. You can use the "My Account" tab to manage your personal information, view and manage the volunteer opportunities you’ve signed up for, create and manage volunteer teams, and more.

  • I am a current Catholic Charities volunteer, but this is my first time visiting the new website. What do I do?

Thank you for your service! Because our site is new, even if you have filled out a volunteer application with us before you will still need to register on this site and create a volunteer profile using the instructions above. 

  • How do I create and manage a volunteer team?

  • I forgot my username. How do I retrieve that information?

Your username is the email address you used when you created your account. 

  • I forgot my password. How do I retrieve that information?

Click the blue "LOGIN" button on the top right of the website. Enter your username and click "Forgot password?" An email with a temporary password will be sent to you. Return to our website, click the blue “LOGIN” button, and enter your username and your temporary password. The system will prompt you to change your password. PLEASE NOTE: Passwords must be at least eight characters.

  • Do I have to have an e-mail address to register?

Yes. Our website uses your email address to identify you and send you important information about any volunteer opportunities you sign up for. If you do not have an email account, you can get one free of charge from Yahoo or Google. Free Internet access is also available from most public libraries.
 



Searching For Projects

  • How do I search and sign up for volunteer opportunities?

Click on "Find an Opportunity" - located in the blue menu bar above. You can find an opportunity that fits your needs in two ways:

1. Enter search criteria in the Basic Search box to find an opportunity that matches your skill set, schedule, interests and more.

2. Browse the Opportunity Calendar to view opportunities based on a certain day or at a specific time. Hover your cursor over the opportunity to see more, and click on it to open it and view full details.
 



Account Management

  • How do I remove myself from a project so that others can take my place?

If you are no longer able to attend an event for which you registered, please remove yourself immediately to allow another volunteer to sign up for the opportunity. (To remove yourself, log in, click “My Account,” the “Overview” link on the left, and then “Remove Me” for the appropriate entry in the “Upcoming Opportunities” box.) We request you remove yourself at least three days prior to the opportunity, if at all possible.

  • I have been waitlisted. Now what?

When (and if) a space opens up, you will be notified via email. Open spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you are still available and interested for the volunteer opportunity, make sure you login, return to the sign-in page and claim one of the open spaces. PLEASE DO NOT JUST SHOW UP FOR THE PROJECT.

  • My hours are not accurate. Why are my hours not showing up?

Please give the Volunteer Leader up to one week to verify attendance. On your Account Overview page, go to your Volunteer History, view the opportunity listing for the project you served at and click the "Request Hours" link.

  • I am concerned about the security of the website and the registration process that requires me to enter personal information. How do I know if the site is secure?

Our site is powered by HandsOn Connect, using the popular Salesforce technology with advanced online security. Because our site is being masked by Salesforce, you won't, for instance, see https in the URL. If you want to know more about Salesforce, you can read their security statement here.
 



Youth/Family Volunteering

  • I am a youth volunteer. How do I get started? How old do I have to be to register on this website?

Youth volunteers 13 and older can login, create a volunteer profile and sign up for volunteer opportunities on our website. Youth volunteers aged 12 and under must volunteer with a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian will ensure there are enough available volunteer spaces for the project, sign up themselves, and then provide the youth’s name, date of birth, and email address in the special question portion of the sign-up process. (Use the filters on the left side of the search page to find age-appropriate projects.) Everyone under the age of 18 must bring a signed Parental Consent Form to each project they attend.
